Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday warned of greater challenges and corruption in the upcoming presidential election if voter registration does not kick off soon.
IEC chief Fazel Ahmad Manawe said that the major preparation needed for the voter registration is not yet underway and fears that fraud is far more likely if this process is not completed in time.
"The most important and difficult thing not yet done is the voter registration process," Manawe said in a joint gathering with the civil society and political parties in Kabul.
"There is a limited time left and we are still at the beginning," he added.
Experts believe that to avoid the fraud prevalent in previous elections the existing voting cards should be nullified and ballot boxes should not placed in the house of tribal elders and Mullahs.
"Please be cautious that do not place the voting boxes in the house of Mullah's and tribal elders, otherwise elections should be full of fraud," Afghan military expert Atiqullah Amarkhil said Monday.
"The previous voting cards should be nullified," Afghan political expert Fazel Rahman Orya told those at the gathering.
According to previous reports, there will be 450 voting centers and 1086 registration centers across Afghanistan.
The next presidential election will be held in April 5 2014.
