The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) is planning to install a national information center through which people will be able to access social, political, and economic information on Afghanistan via their mobile phone.
Ministry officials said on Sunday that the installation of such a system may take up to two years.
"With the installation of this software, within two years customers will receive useful and necessary information through their cell phones," MoCIT Deputy Minister, Technical, Baryalai Hasam said.
The customers of different telecom companies will be able to receive information about practical matters related to weather and roads, as well as education and security.
Ministry officials said that the service would be a government-funded scheme that would be available at no extra cost to the telecom companies.
The scheme is one part of a six-tier "Development of Electronic Governance Programme" being funded with the support of the World Bank and worth more than $5 million in total, officials said.
Meanwhile, the ministry is supporting professional and short-term training in the field of information technology for more than 1500 students and government employees for the next three years.
Private company Rana Technology is helping train the students.
"We are trying to train about 500 students in the field of information technology. These people after receiving enough learning to be capable of adequate and efficient work," Rana chief Farhad Ghafoor said.
