Afghan Carpet Producers and Exporters Association is seeking to set up an educational institute of carpet weaving to maintain the high level of skill required for the industry to thrive, the association said Saturday.

Association officials said that a carpet weaving institute will also pave the way for standardisation of the carpet industry in the country, but so far there has been little government interest in the idea.

"We frequently suggest this to the Commerce and Education Ministries to create the institute but they take it easy, while it is a basic necessity in this industry," an Association official Haji Nabi said.

The institute would cover subjects such as production of raw materials, carpet planning, weaving, painting and the process of selling carpets in order to ensure high calibre carpet weavers in the industry.

Haji Nabi said that most of the the people currently working in the carpet industry do not even have basic literacy so they are not as capable of using the technologies available to facilitate work in this industry.

The association's officials believe that by standardising the industry they will open up more more opportunities for the growth of carpet weaving and exports in all Afghanistan.
