Baghlan Police Department on Thursday said that the policewoman's husband has killed her with an axe and escaped the area. Efforts are underway to arrest the criminal.

The victim, Sabza, served in Baghlan Police Department. Police said that investigations have begun to identify the cause of the incident.

"Her husband has killed her with an axe on the head," Baghlan Police Chief Spokesman Besharat said.

The victim's family has asked the legal and judicial organs to bring the criminal to justice. Jawed, the victim's brother, asked the government to arrest the criminal and ensure his trial.

"We demand that the officials investigate the case and find the cause of the killing," he added.

This year several cases of murders of women were recorded in Baghlan province.

In September 2013, Negar, one of the high-ranking female police officers in Helmand province, passed away in a hospital from critical injuries from an attack by unidentified gunmen.

Negar was 50 years old and had been working as policewoman for 30 years. She had been threatened on multiple occasions by the Taliban and told to leave her office or face dire consequences. However, Taliban did not claim the responsibility for the attack.

Back in August, a policewoman was killed by insurgents in Helmand. Islam Bibi, a Lieutenant, had received a number of death threats from Taliban prior to her assassination.

The recent targeting of female police officers is nothing new, both in terms of attacks on security personnel and violence against women. This year the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) reported that violence against women was on the rise in Afghanistan, despite attempts over the years to curtail it and empower women.
