Around 80 percent of Afghanistan's dairy is imported, particularly from Iran and Pakistan, the Kabul Dairy Union said on Saturday.
Only five cooperative unions have been created for collecting, processing and producing dairy, the union said. About 27,000 liters of milk is collected by the unions per day.
According to the Kabul Dairy Union, governmental neglect, lack of refrigerator cars and security issues are main reasons behind lagging dairy production.
"The program of collecting, processing and selling dairy products is not a easy task. The farmers need some training and funds in order to technically collect milk," the Director of Kabul Dairy Union, Ghulam Zakarya Ahmadzai, said.
In 2007, Afghanistan produced 16 percent of its dairy needs, up to 20 percent today, according to union officials.
