Sixteen insurgents were killed and six were arrested during a series of coordinated operations over the past 24 hours carried out by the Afghan National Army (ANA), Afghan National Police (ANP) and National Directorate of Security (NDS), the Afghan Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Tuesday.
The operations led by Afghan forces have intensified across the country as Afghanistan moves closer to elections in less than three months.
The operations were conducted in Baghlan, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Maidan Wardak and Logar provinces.
"Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated light and heavy rounds ammunition and IEDs," the statement said.
The statement did not report any casualties amongst the Afghan forces or local civilians.
There are over 350,000 Afghan soldiers serving at the moment. Foreign troops are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, after handing over full security responsibility to the Afghan forces.
