Police Officer Killed in Baghlan Roadside Bomb Blast

A police officer was killed and one person injured in a roadside bomb blast in northern Baghlan province early Wednesday, local officials said.

"The blast took place in the Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the province, when the police officer's vehicle fell prey to roadside bomb," the Provincial Police Chief General Asadullah Shirzad said.

The victims have been taken to a nearby hospital.

No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Insurgents frequently use Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to target the Afghan and Nato troops, unfortunately, the civilians become victims of such attacks.

So far, this week, nearly 40 civilians were killed in separate attacks within Afghanistan.

In a news release issued by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama), which noted that conflict-related violence has killed 125 Afghan civilians and injured 287 in the past two weeks.

The Mission pointed out that the high civilian death toll in the past two weeks represents a 24 percent increase in total civilian casualties from the same period in 2012.

The anti-government elements were responsible for 84 per cent of all civilian casualties during the past two weeks.
