11 insurgents were killed and two others injured in several joint operations carried out by the Afghan and coalition security forces in Afghanistan on Saturday, Isaf said.

"Afghan and coalition security forces killed eight insurgents during an operation carried out in search of a senior Taliban leader in the Achin district of Nangarhar province," Isaf said in a statement.

The leader is known to have planned, coordinated and executed multiple attacks against various Afghan government facilities, in addition to Afghan and coalition forces. He maintains operational control over numerous insurgent groups in the local area, and relays operational guidance from senior Taliban leadership to his fighters, the statement said.

In another operation, one Taliban insurgent was killed and two others were injured by the Afghan Local Police (ALP), while defending the Haji Safraz checkpoint in the Archi district of Northern Kunduz province on Saturday, Isaf said.

Fierce exchange of fire took place between the ALP and Taliban fighters after the checkpoint was attacked. Following the gun battle, ALP transferred custody of the dead and wounded insurgents to the Afghan Uniformed Police.

Meanwhile, a Taliban facilitator and two other insurgents were arrested in a joint operation in the Arghandab district of Southern Kandahar province on Saturday, Isaf said.

The facilitator is responsible for procuring improvised explosive devices and distributing them to multiple insurgent groups throughout Arghandab and Dand districts.

In a separate joint operation carried out in the Muhammad Aghah district of Logar province, two insurgents were killed. The operation was carried out in search of a Haqqani affiliated Taliban leader.
