The Afghan security forces will take the lead of all military operations in the upcoming two months, the Afghan Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday.

The foreign combat role will end completely in the battlefield and Afghan security forces will "perform all ground military operations independently," the Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said at a press conference.

"In military operations foreigners will not have any role, it means that we terminate foreign forces' role in the battlefield and Afghan National Army and Afghan National police will fight," Zahir Azimi said.

The ministry is optimistic about increasing of Afghan security forces' capability and capacities, the forces which will undertake all security responsibilities by the end of this year. But the ministry said that the Afghan security forces need foreign military forces' assistance in some of the operations.

"We still have some dependence to foreigners for example in air field, air transportation, special operations we need some intelligence and engineering issue," Azimi said.

The Afghan security forces have been leading 90% of all military operations in the country, according to officials.

The Afghan security forces will take over full security responsibilities from foreign troops by the end of 2014, as the foreign troops will leave Afghanistan.

Last week, the Nato Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen at a meeting in Brussels said that "Nato's support to the Afghan army sustainment takes shape."

The Nato Foreign Ministers from Nato and Isaf partner nations made commitment in shaping Nato's long-term support to Afghanistan at the Brussels meeting.

There are around 100,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan helping over 300,000 Afghan security forces fight insurgency.
