The police chief of western Nimroz province has been killed by a roadside bomb in Herat province while he was driving Monday morning, a police official said.
Gen. Mohammad Musa Rasoli was on the road returning to Nimroz when his vehicle struck the bomb in the Aderskan district of Herat, the official said.
One of his bodyguards was injured in the blast and is being treated in a Herat hospital.
No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the blast.
Nimroz shares a border with Iran to the west and Pakistan to the south. Insurgents frequently target local troops and Nato-led foreign forces.
