Isaf will continue its fight against insurgents through the winter this year to diminish insurgents' capability to regroup for their spring offensive, the Isaf spokesman said Tuesday.

In a joint press conference with Nato's civilian spokesman Dominic Medley, General Gunter Katz praised the capabilities of the Afghan security forces and emphasized the need for continued cooperation between foreign and Afghan forces.

"During these winter months, which the insurgents have typically used to regroup, waiting for what they have termed the 'fighting season,' I want to make it clear that Isaf and the ANSF have no operational pause. In these months we continue our relentless pressure on the insurgency," said Gen. Katz.

Medley said that the capabilities of the Afghan forces are growing, and they are now protecting the majority of the population.

"The Afghan army and police are steadily growing in capacity and confidence ... and Nato is committed to Afghanistan with a new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces," Medley said.

There are more than 100,000 foreign forces in Afghanistan, most of them American, alongside 350,000 Afghan security forces fighting the insurgents.
