Karzai Meets Secretary of Iran's National Security Council

President Hamid Karzai met the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Dr. Sayed Jalili, on Saturday in Kabul, President Office said.

"At the meeting held in the Presidential Palace, the two sides discussed ways to broaden and deepen bilateral relations, and politico-economic cooperation between the two countries as well as exchanged views on regional affairs," Karzai's office said in a statement.

Sayed Jalili said that Afghanistan and Iran share a common history and culture, adding that Iran is seeking shared interests and an institutionalized relationship between the two nations.

"Agreeing in the meeting on a tripartite session between Afghanistan, Iran and India, the two sides stressed on continued collaboration, strengthening of institutions, and exchange of experiences between the two countries," he statement said.

The National Security Adviser to the President Rangin Dadfar Spanta also met Jalili and discussed security, economics and border issues.

Mr. Spanta also discussed issues related to Iran's Chabahar port and railway plans between the countries.

Mr. Jalili's visit to Kabul comes just days before President Karzai is scheduled to meet President Obama in Washington. He is expected to discuss the bilateral security agreement amd the residual US force in Afghanistan, something that is of concern to Iran.
