A man named Ahmad Shah in western Herat province threw a hand grenade at his wife and young children on Monday, local officials said. The suspect fled the scene after leaving his family badly injured by the explosion.
The incident took place in Guzara District of Herat, Provincial Police Chief Samihullah Qatra said.
"His wife Alima and two children were injured," Qatra said. "One of the children is one and second is 3 years old."
Ahmad Shah's family has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and the police have begun investigating the incident.
The exact cause of the altercation is unknown, but Alima said her husband is a drug addict.
"He is unemployed and he was not able to provide food for us, so he decided to kill us," Alima said. "He is a drug addict and recently he was starting to smuggle weapons."
Alima said she married Ahmad Shah eight years ago and they are residents of Herat city.
