Twenty four of 414 polling centers that were previously to be closed due to security threats will be open on election day, the Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday.

"Twenty four of 414 polling centers which was announced would likely remain closed on election days, will be open. The polling centers are in Ghour, Badakshan and Kapisa province," the ministry's spokesman, Sediq Sedddiqi, said.

"The police forces' military operations continue to provide security for more polling centers," he added.

Previously, the MoI submitted an assessment to election officials indicating that out of the 6,645 total polling stations, 414 in various parts of the country would likely remain closed due to security threats.

Seddiqi said the Afghan forces are trying to provide security for more polling centers which remain under security threats.

He reassured the presidential candidates about the security measures being taken to ensure they and their campaign teams are safe as they set out on the campaign trail to rally support over the next month and a half.

Seddiqi said the security forces have conducted more than 90 operations in the past week across the country for the security of the elections.

Officials of the ministry say that the insurgents are trying to destabilise the elections, but that Afghan forces are ready for the process.
