Afghans Want Nationwide Campaigns

On Thursday, a number of Afghan citizens and registered voters called on the Presidential candidates to broaden the scope of their campaigns nationwide so that everyone receives adequate information ahead of the April vote.

Kabul has hosted several campaign rallies and gatherings in the past 12 days. In fact, only a few hours after the election campaigns officially started, the city was covered in election posters and banners.

Social media has also become a good medium for candidates to conduct campaigns.

However, it has become increasingly clear over the past week that the attention candidates have given voters has been disproportionately focused in the capital of Kabul. Residents of other provinces have complained that they are unclear about what the candidates stand for, and in some cases, even unaware of who are the candidates.

"Until now they have not come to our village, but they have promised to come," a Takhar resident named Baba Jan told TOLOnews.

"They should think of the whole country, not only Kabul," a Farah resident said.

"They [candidates] should also go to the provinces, because people do not know anything about their campaigns," a Kabul reisdent named Abdullah said.

On Thursday there reports of some of the candidates, or their representatives, traveling to southern and eastern provinces like Nangarhar, Nimroz and Laghman. But still they were said to have remained in the major urban areas, neglecting the more remote parts of the provinces.

With over a month left in the campaign season, there is time for the candidates to get out and spread their campaign's reach. But given the uncertainty surrounding insecurity and electoral fraud, neglecting much of the country the first two weeks of the campaigns probably did not do any good for the prospects of the April vote.
