Afghanistan and Italy signed an agreement on Monday in which $200 million of Italian aid money will be given to Afghanistan, much of which will be used to transform Herat airport into the biggest cargo airport in Afghanistan.
The money will also fund construction of Herat Ring Road and Chesht-Herat highway. The projects are scheduled to be completed by 2017.
The money would fund the construction of a new runway and terminal, new equipment for airplanes and passengers, and the construction of the biggest station for airplanes.
"The reconstruction of Herat airport as an international airport, will cost around $39 million," said Afghan Minister of Finance Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal.
The Governor of Herat Province, Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi said that the projects set to be implemented by Italy will be supervised by Afghan related organizations.
"We will supervise the projects, as the quality of projects was main topic of discussion," Wahidi said.
