Next year will be very important for Afghan security forces as they push enemies back and provide security all over the country, Isaf said.

In an exclusive interview with TOLOnews, Isaf's Director of Public Affairs for Afghanistan Thomas Collins emphasized that the international community will continue its support of Afghan security forces and will have an advisory and assistance role after 2013.

"2013 will be a pivotal year that's a year in which the Afghan National Security Forces will really be in the lead throughout the whole of the country for security as we get deeper in 2013," Collins said.

He also added that Afghan army and police forces have had many achievements in 2012.

"As far as achievements this year, I think the transition of the Afghan army tranche three ... means that the Afghan army is more and more in the lead for security of this country. Some 75 percent of the people now come under the security lead of the Afghan forces," he said.

"I think that is the greatest and most significant of 2012," he added.

He said that Taliban have suffered significant losses in their mid-level leadership as evidenced by a decrease in Taliban activity since October.

"If you notice, since about October and November, and now in December, the amount of enemy activity has been down significantly from where it has been in the previous year and we think that is an indicator of the progress Afghan army and police have made in providing security," he added.

He was expressed confidence about the capabilities of Afghan security forces and reiterated that Nato will continue to provide training and assistance.

"We are very confident. People have to remember that the international community is going to be here with Afghanistan. We are going to continue to fund programs that will help the Afghan security forces to continue to improve their security and capabilities, so, just because the coalition footprint is getting smaller doesn't mean that the Afghan army and police will feel a void."
