A suicide attack targeted a foreign troop vehicle near Pul-e-Charkhi prison in eastern Kabul on Monday afternoon. The attack killed two contractors working for the NATO coalition.
A statement released by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) following the incident confirmed that two people were killed by a "vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack."
Afghan civilian deaths were also reported, but the death toll remains unclear.
Two vehicles were damaged by the blast, and foreign and Afghan forces have blocked off the road where the attack occured.
Hezb-i-Islami, one of the largest insurgent groups in Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Two weeks ago, a suicide bomber blew himself up close to a bus full of soldiers in Kabul. Two soldiers on the bus and two civilians on the road died. The Taliban claimed responsibility.
Insurgents have stepped-up their activities in recent months, deviating from the normal spring-summer fighting season routine. Experts say the offensive is part of militants' effort to derail the upcoming elections ahead of the NATO troop withdraw.
