According to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), essential election materials such as voting ballots, ink and other items have been dispatched to 27 provinces, with the remaining seven expected to receive their materials in the next two weeks.

"One of important issues that Independent Election Commission has been working on is the packing of essential election materials," IEC spokesman Noor Muhammad Noor said. "These items are packed based on a specific code for all provinces and districts."

The IEC recently had 1.3 million sample voting ballots produced to distrbute to some of the more remote areas in Afghanistan. The intention was to familiarize voters with the voting process.

The IEC also announced that 3,000 new employees are being taken on in order to help with the demand of getting things ready for the elections in different parts of the country. These "coordinators" will be expected to perform all the needed administrative work in the provinces, including counting ballots after the elections.

"The hiring process of local coordinators is almost completed," Noor said. "Probably next week, all the local coordinators will start their work around the country."

IEC also reports hiring of close to 1,500 individuals for building voter awareness.
