The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday warned the Presidential candidates that they would be disqualified form the elections if any evidence came to light indicating they had received supporting funds from foreign sources.

The IEC has stressed the importance of financial transparency during the campaign season, which began on Sunday, requiring all eleven Presidential hopefuls to submit bank statements on their inflows and outflows.

"If we receive proof that a candidate received foreign aid, we would take serious action against it and there is a possibility that their name would be removed from the list," IEC Commissioner Sarir Ahamd Barmak said.

The Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) would get involved if any rules regarding campaign finances are violated.

"We have distributed special forms to the representatives of the candidates, and they should report to us according to the same form," Barmak explained. "Now, if the candidate hasn't made a bank account or hasn't registered his assets with the Commission, we can take legal action against them."

Based on the Election Law, Presidential candidates are allowed to expend 10 million AFG while Provincial Council candidates can only spend 500,000 AFG during their campaigns.
