The General Commander of the Kabul Police Academy, Sayed Noorullah Zal, has said that corruption is a greater threat to the Afghan government than the Taliban insurgency as it enables the militants to conduct their attacks.
"For our government, the insurgents are not as dangerous as the corrupt people are, because if there were no corrupt people in the government, the insurgents could not even get into Kabul city," Noorullah Zal said.
Noorullah Zal made his comments at a joint meeting with the High Office of Oversight and Anti-Corruption on Saturday.
At the meeting, the High Office of Anti-Corruption said that ignoring principles of meritocracy in hiring and appointment practices in government was the major cause of corruption.
"The problem is in the recruitment system," Deputy Mohammad Amin Khoramji said. "You know, and I'll say it frankly, that meritocracy and having expertise is completely ignored in the recruitment system."
At the end of the meeting, the anti corruption office and police academy signed a cooperation agreement geared toward fighting corruption. And it was approved that fighting corruption would be integrated into the curriculum of the police academiy.
