Presidential candidates on Tuesday gathered in Kabul for a conference on Afghanistan's national interests just days ahead of the beginning of the official campaign period.

The gathering was comprised of a number of prominent politicians, Presidential candidates and their running mates and was organized to provide a forum for leaders to discuss important national issues as the April elections draw near and the NATO troop withdraw continues as planned.
Meanwhile, the candidates also found common ground in their critcisms of President Hamid Karzai's peace initiative with the Taliban, the transparency of the previous elections and recent statements made by Karzai's exposed by the former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his new book.At the conclusion of the event, the Presidential candidates pledged to continue their discussions and exchange of views surrounding the protection of Afghanistan's national interests. They ended with a call to election officials to ensure the April vote is transparent and fair.
