The Georgian soldier Georgy Kikadze, who had been reported missing since December 19, was found dead in Afghanistan on Saturday, the Georgian ministry of defense said.

"We have informed the family of the deceased, and I personally apologized to the mother of the deceased for being too optimistic, commented that Kikadze alive. I condole the family and friends," the Georgian Defense Minister Irakliy Alasania told reporters.

Afghan police found the body in Helmand and handed it over to Isaf, a Nato statement said. Officials have not disclosed how Kikadze died or if insurgents were involved, but the statement said he was captured.

A search operation was conducted by Nato armed forces and Georgian troops. The First Deputy Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Vakhtang Kapanadze was also dispatched to Afghanistan for the search operation.

Georgia has around 1,700 troops in Afghanistan, and it lost 21 soldiers in the Afghan war.

It comes as a Nato soldier was killed in a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan Saturday, Isaf said.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan Dec. 29," Isaf said in a statement.

The exact location of the attack and the nationality of the soldier was not released.
