The Afghan media advocacy organization, Nai, on Thursday requested that the Independent Election Commission's (IEC) working guidelines for media be reviewed again and be made available for revisions.

Nai has reportedly already made recommendations to the IEC regarding some changes to the Media Commission's working procedures, which outline the protocal for Afghan media's coverage of the elections, and asked for a number of amendments to certain articles.

"The bill that was prepared by the IEC Media Commission is according to the Mass Media Law and the Constitution, however, there are some problems in it and Nai wants the bill to be reviewed," Nai Executive Chairman Mujeeb Khalwatgar said.

Meanwhile, Nai has also continued to emphasize the importance of a Right To Information Law being put in place prior to the elections.

"Nine days remain until the election campaigns and a Right To Information Law should be implemented on the basis of a Presidential Legislative Decree," Mr. Khalwatgar said.

Chairman NAI accused some government officials of opposing the approval of the RTI Law, leading to a delay in its passage that could effect the way the elections are covered.

RTI legislation – a legal framework governing access to information – is abundant around the world, and considered an essential part of any country's formalized approach to government transparency, media and the rights of citizens to acquire information about their government.
