With the implementation of 26 new road projects, valued 100 million USD, over two thousand streets in the capital will be paved in the coming year, according to Kabul Mayor Muhammad Younus Nawandesh.

Kabul is notorious for its unruly, dense traffic. Despite being the capital of Afghanistan, many of its roads are unpaved or in disrepair. However, the new public infrastructure initiative announced by Mayor Nawandesh this week is expected to have a dramatic impact on the face of the city.

The construction of five main roads in different parts of Kabul has been planned and opened up for bidding amongst companies. The winner of the bids is expected to be announced soon.

According to Nawandesh, with the start of the new year, roads from the Polytechnic University to Mirwais Maidan, from Parwan Sewom to Sesad-o-Panzda, from Kartse to Shaheed Square and from Karte Chahar Square to Karte Sakhi will be reconstructed.

"Roads from Tank Tel Logal will be extended to Chehl Dokhtaran, a special road will be built named Metro Bus for city buses, which will go through tunnels that will connect Karte Sakhi with Karte Ariana, and Sultan Mahmood Road will connect Airport Square to Pol Charkhi road," the Mayor explained.

Nawandesh said that in addition to adding green space to Eidgah mosque in Kabul, plans are in the works to create a tunnel through TV Mountain to make way for a road from Karte Ariana to Karte Sakhi.
