The Attorney General's office on Monday announced that the investigations into past criminal activities of current Presidential candidates would be folded after insufficient evidence was found to continue them.

Five Presidential candidates reportedly had cases forwarded on to the Attorney General's office two weeks ago by election officials for further investigation. The cases were said to include allegations of human rights violations.

"After a comprehensive investigation into the Presidential candidates of the upcoming elections, the Attorney General's office couldn't find any specific charges against any of the candidates," spokesman for the Attorney General Baseer Azizi said.

In response to the question whether cases of these individuals have been closed in the Attorney General's Office for ever, Mr. Azizi responded that: "Whether in the future or now, if the crime is an issue of someone's rights, their cases will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of Afghanistan."

The Attorney General's office denied to name any of the five Presidential candidates who were investigated, but emphasized that the inquiries were detailed and thorough.
