At least five Taliban insurgents and a NATO solider have been killed on Saturday morning when a group of insurgents launched an early morning raid on a joint military base, officials said.
The incident took place in Ghanikhil district of Nangarhar province, when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle at the gate of the base and paved the way for four other insurgents to penetrate into the compound, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial government.
"The gunfire continued for about half an hour and all the insurgents were killed," he said.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Ghanikhil district is one of the volatile districts in Nangarhar province.
