The High Peace Council plans to discuss peace talks at the Islamic Countries Conference next week, and urge member states to lend their support to reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan.

HPC members leave for Saudi Arabia on Friday to participate in the Islamic Countries Conference.

"The goal of this conference is to gather the religious, Islamic and Sharia opinions of Islamic scholars from around the world, so that we can work for peace and stability in Afghanistan, the region and other Islamic countries," HPC spokesman Mawlawi Shahzada Shahed said.

Additionally, another HPC delegation plans to travel to Pakistan in the near future in order to secure the support of Taliban leaders for peace talks.

"We have a plan for the prisoners who have been released from Pakistani prisons and those who are in-charge to meet with a group from the HPC at a suitable time and discuss peace, unity and solidarity in Afghanistan...and we will try to get their support," Shahed said.

According to experts, the Taliban have many supporters on the Arab peninsula and in Pakistan, which makes them important to peace in Afghanistan.

Up to now, President Hamid Karzai and HPC members have traveled to Pakistan several times to discuss peace talks and try to meet with Taliban and Pakistani officials. But these trips have failed to yield any major progress so far.
