A NATO service member died in eastern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement on Monday.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died after direct fire attack by enemy forces in eastern Afghanistan today," the statement said.

ISAF officials did not provide more details about the exact location of the incident or the nationality of the soldier. Most of the NATO troops in eastern Afghanistan are American.

Last week, six U.S. troops were killed and one wounded in a helicopter crash in the Shah Joy district of southern Zabul province.

U.S. military officials said that insurgents did not shoot down the helicopter, but they are investigating whether any of the U.S. troops were killed by gunfire from Taliban insurgents after the crash.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the crash while ISAF officials have said the cause is still under investigation.

Before Monday's crash, there had been 156 NATO fatalities in Afghanistan this year, 126 of them US soldiers, according to the independent icasualties website.

NATO combat operations are due to end next year and Afghan forces will take over full security responsibility from the foreign troops.

There are currently 42,700 US troops deployed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led force that is due to withdraw by the end of 2014.

Nevertheless, according to NATO and Afghan officials, the Afghan security forces have assumed the bulk of leadership on operations throughout the country already.
