Officials of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) said on Sunday that soon 28 million ballots would be printed for the upcoming Presidential and Provincial Council elections.

The ballots are expected to be sent to and stored inside the central IEC office in Kabul once made.

The ballots for the Presidential election will number 14 million and then another 14 million for the Provincial Council election.

"We will use top quality materials for the upcoming elections," said IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor.

IEC officials took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of holding transparent elections. But the officials reiterated their concerns about the security of the elections.

Noor said the IEC expected full reports from the security institutions on progress made in the preparation process soon.

Officials from the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said the Afghan security forces are doing their best to provide security for the upcoming elections, which many experts have said is critical to the vote's credibility.

"The election is very important for the Ministry of Interior and according to the plan we will provide security for the 7,000 polling centers," MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqi said. "And a low number of the polling centers are still in threat, which the Afghan forces will try to provide security for."

Officials of the IEC recently said that the security institutions must share the un-doctored outcomes of their security assessments regarding the April elections before January 5.

The IEC shared the list of planned polling stations with security officials of the Afghan military, intelligence and police fourteen months ago. Now, as questions about whether or not the elections will be held on time or if they will be legitimate continue to circulate, the IEC awaits the results of the security assessments.
