A number of armed guards providing security for First Vice-President Mohammad Qasim Fahim during his visit to the National Assembly yesterday reportedly beat an advisor of the Senate House Administration Board.

Afghan Senators on Sunday said that the advisor was seriously injured during the altercation and is currently under treatment in a hospital in Kabul city.

The incident was accompanied by other controversy, when members of the National Assembly were searched by dogs yesterday morning as they entered their offices as part of security procedures surrounding Fahim's visit. The First Vice-President nominated five new ministers on Saturday.

Afghan Senators spoke out against the security precautions and the incident involving the advisor.

"Yesterday, one of our advisors named Khalil Shankar was beaten by security forces, who came to provide security for Marshal Fahim," Senate Secretariat head Sayed Farokh Shah Jenab said. "His nose is broken and his side is hurt and he is currently in the hospital."

The Senators added that searching Parliamentarians with dogs had never happened before, even when President Hamid Karzai had come.

Meanwhile, the Second Deputy of the Senate Rafiullah Gul Afghan ordered a Committee to name the accused persons guards to the Attorney General's office.

"The Defense Committee is responsible for introducing the men who beat the Senate's advisor to the Attorney General," Gul Afghan said.

Some Senators said they thought the security guards of some MPs also were involved in bullying and physical altercations with Senate staffers in the past.

"You are all aware that guards of some MPs have also done such things and it is not completely new," Senator Mullah Mohammad Faizi said.
