Civil society groups and the Afghan Anti-corruption Network declared this year's winners of the "Honest Man" award MP Dr. Ramazan Bashardost and a traffic officer Abdul Saboor.

The "Honest Man" award is given annually to praise certain individuals for the integrity of their work, often focusing on their lack of involvement in corruption, which is a problem that bedevils local and national administration around the country.

In a special gathering in Kabul, Saboor was applauded for his service over several years maintaining discipline on the streets without having a single driver make a complaint about him.

"I will always conduct my job honestly and continue to serve my people," Saboor said.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) applauded Saboor as well.

"He has always conducted his job honestly and has taken no bribe," the Ministry of Interior spokesman Sediq Sediqi said on Tuesday. "He even served as a traffic officer during the Taliban regime."

Saboor has received several awards during his tenure and last year President Hamid Karzai offered his praises.

"I hope that my counterparts in the National Police, National Army and Directorate of National Security conduct their duties effectively and with honesty," Saboor said. "The police force should abide by the slogan 'Police in Service of People,' and they should be content with their salaries and think about serving the people."
