The United Nations (UN) Women office released a report on violence against women over the course of the past 30 years of conflict in Afghanistan. The report argued women have been the greatest victims of the volatility in Afghanistan over the years, and implored the government to take steps to protect women's rights moving forward.
The report comes as rates of violence against women in Afghanistan have risen this year, surpassing numbers set in 2012.
The UN women's office has described a "culture of impunity" in Afghanistan when it comes to the mistreatment of women.
According to the report, the most pressing issue surround violence against women in Afghanistan involve child marriages, sexual abuse, runaways and adult forced marriages.
"70 to 80 percent have been forced marriages, and 87 percent of women have experienced physical, psychological and sexual violence once in their life time," UN representative Hassan Fahimi said.
The UN Women office based its 80-page report, titled "Afghan Women Oral History," on 730 testimonies from Afghan women and girls. Information was gathered from 34 districts in the seven provinces of Kabul, Balkh, Jowzjan, Herat, Daikondi, Bamyan and Kandahar.
