As election fever grips the nation, several supporters of Dr. Zalmai Khalilzad, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), gathered in Herat province on Friday and requested him to run for Presidency. The supporters urged Zalmai Khalilzad to file his nomination as quickly as possible and start preparing for the electoral campaign.
The supporters, who had gathered at the Herat Sports Stadium, stressed on the need for holding free and transparent elections. They demanded that the security institutions should handle the security situation in the disturbed provinces at the earliest. The participants asked everyone to support Khalilzad's candidacy as it would be in the nation's best interest.
As the timeline for the election campaigns draws near, all political parties and coalitions are trying hard to expand their network of supporters and prepare strategies to win the confidence of the voters in support of their respective candidate.
Only nine days remain for filing nomination papers with the Independent Election Commission (IEC), and so far, only Bismillah Sher of the Wefaq Millie Party (WMP) has filed his nomination.
Presidential and Provincial Councils' candidates have until October 6 to submit their names and meet the considerable requirements set for the upcoming elections. The IEC has urged all the candidates to submit their documents on time or face rejection.
The election is set for April 5, but with the candidate registration period coming to an end, preparations are in high gear. News about who is going to contest the elections will likely be breaking over the course of the next couple of weeks.
