The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) announced in a statement on Friday that a NATO service member died in eastern Afghanistan. The death was said to have been "non-battle related."

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died as a result of a non-battle related injury in eastern Afghanistan today. The incident is currently under investigation," ISAF said in a statement.

ISAF officials did not provide more details about the exact location of the incident or the nationality of the soldier. However, it is widely known that most of the NATO troops in Eastern Afghanistan are American.

There are around 100,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, out of which around 68,000 are Americans.

Foreign forces are scheduled to leave by the end of 2014 with the end of the NATO combat mission, after which time the Afghan security forces – currently numbering at around 300,000 men – will take over full security responsibility of the country.

Nevertheless, according to NATO and Afghan officials, the Afghan security forces have assumed the bulk of leadership on operations throughout the country already.
