Ministry of Interior (MoI) officials said in a statement on Tuesday that 12 insurgents were killed, two injured and 33 others arrested in a series of coordinated operations launched by the Afghan security forces across the country on Monday.

"In the past 24-hours, Afghan National Police (ANP) conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of the Afghan National Army (ANA), National Directorate of Security (NDS) and coalition forces to clear areas of terrorists and enemies of peace and stability in Afghanistan," read the MoI statement.

The operations were conducted in Helmand, Ghor, Paktiya, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Kunduz, Baghlan and Nangarhar provinces.

The statement said that deactivating insurgents' weaponry was a major focus of the operations. The Afghan forces reportedly confiscated a significant amount of light and heavy rounds of ammunition as well as diffused a number of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) set-up by the insurgent cells hit in the operations.

"The forces discovered and diffused five different types of mines placed by enemies of Afghanistan for destructive activities in Laghman, Baghlan, Jowzjan and Logar provinces," the MoI statement said.

On Monday, Helmand provincial officials confirmed that a joint operation between the ANP and ANA resulted in the deaths of at least 25 insurgents. Reportedly the strike foiled plans by insurgents in the Gerishk District of Helmand to launch large-scale attacks in the area.

With foreign troops withdrawing at the end of 2014, and the security transition now in its final stage, the Afghan security forces have assumed increasing responsibility for counterinsurgency efforts throughout the country. Although insurgent violence has flared this year, so has the success of the Afghan security forces in their operations.
