Officials from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reported on that a NATO soldier was killed in an explosion early Saturday morning in eastern Afghanistan.
"One International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today," ISAF said in a statement.
ISAF did not provide more details about the exact location of the incident or the nationality of the soldier. However, it is a known fact that most of the NATO troops in Eastern Afghanistan are American.
The death marks the fifth NATO casualty this month after three U.S. service members were killed in an insurgent attack in Paktia province on August 11 and one was killed in an attack last Tuesday, August 20. Saturday's death raises the number of foreign troops killed in action in Afghanistan this year to 116.
There are around 100,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, out of which around 68,000 are Americans.
Foreign troops in Afghanistan are scheduled to leave by the end of 2014 with the end of the NATO combat mission, after which time the Afghan security forces – currently numbering at around 300,000 men – will take over full security responsibility of the country.
Nevertheless, according to NATO and Afghan officials, the Afghan security forces have assumed the bulk of leadership on operations throughout the country already.
