The Afghan Ministry of Public Works and the local officials of northern Balkh province on Sunday inaugurated the construction of a railway project in north of Afghanistan.
The Minister of Public Works Najibullah Ozhan said that the 330 kilometre railway project will start from Kaldar District of northern Balkh province and end at the Aqina Port in Faryab province.
With the construction of this railway line, Afghanistan will find its way into central Asia and then into Europe. Afghanistan will become a part of the Central Asia Railways.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Balkh province Atta Mohammad Noor said that the railway project will certainly give a boost to trade and commerce.
"We will greatly benefit from this railway project. Job opportunities will increase and the economic system will improve," Atta Mohammad Noor said.
The Mazar-e-Sharif-Aqina Railway Project is estimated to cost around $150 million and will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
