Several Taliban insurgents attacked the Du-Aab district of eastern Nuristan province on Monday, injuring the district police chief and four other police officers, local officials said.
"The Taliban have blocked the highway leading to the district and clashes continue. Several Taliban insurgents have been killed by security forces," Provincial Governor Mohammad Tamim Nuristani said.
He called on the central government to send more troops to the province to bolster local security forces.
There were no reports about the number of civilian casualties during the attacks, Nuristani said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said several Afghan security forces have been killed in the clashes.
Nuristan province borders Pakistan. Insurgents have previously attacked Du Ab and other districts, including Waigal and Barg-i-Matal.
