A senior leader of Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) was killed in a joint Afghan and Nato operation in northern Balkh province, Isaf said.
"Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader, Feda Mohammad, during an operation in Balkh district of Balkh province, Saturday," Isaf said in a statement Monday.
Feda Mohammad, also known as Omari, had a long history of planning attacks against civilians and Afghan and coalition forces, the statement said.
"Prior to Afghan New Year celebrations in March, Mohammad coordinated a failed attack against public gatherings, specifically targeting the Balkh provincial governor and other government officials with suicide bombers," it said.
He also had extensive experience facilitating the movement of improvised explosive devices for use in insurgent operations.
The statement also said that Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of a senior Taliban leader, Mullah Hayatullah, during an operation in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, Thursday.
Hayatullah was one of the top officials for the Taliban in Maiwand district. He was responsible for organising and planning improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
He also facilitated the movement of supplies, to include heavy and light weapons, for the Taliban network in his area and plotted to assassinate Afghans who support the local government and Afghan National Security Forces.
Meanwhile, in a joint operation in eastern Khost province, a Haqqani leader and two other insurgents were captured during an operation in Matun district of the province on Saturday.
The leader is believed to have been involved in planning and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He has also performed reconnaissance operations for his cell, gathering and relaying intelligence to his fellow Haqqani fighters in order to bolster insurgent operations.
