A senor Taliban leader has been detained and two other insurgents have been killed in a joint Afghan and Nato troops operation in southern Helmand province this morning, Isaf said Wednesday.
"An Afghan and coalition security force detained a senior Taliban leader and killed two other insurgents during an operation in Marjeh district, Helmand province, today," Isaf said.
The leader, who is not named in the Isaf statement, is believed to coordinate and direct assaults, ambushes, and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, as well as supply IED components, heavy weapons and ammunition to Taliban fighters, Isaf said.
In the operation, three other insurgents were also arrested, it added.
Security forces confirmed Wednesday the death of a Haqqani facilitator, Khaliq Mir, during a Monday operation in Khost province's Sabari district.
"Mir was responsible for acquiring and distributing weapons to his fellow fighters throughout Khost province. He was also a member of a cell of fighters responsible for planning and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces," Isaf said.
In other joint military operations, a Haqqani leader and one other insurgent were arrested Wednesday in Tsamkani district of Paktiya province.
Isaf said that the leader is believed to have operational control over IED operations in multiple districts throughout Paktiya and Khost provinces, including using local children to carry out insurgent activities.
Meanwhile, several insurgents were captured by Afghan National Army Special Forces, supported by Isaf, and recovered weapons during an operation on Tuesday in the Warduj district of Badakhshan province.
"The combined force arrested the individuals after discovering a suspected insurgent medical treatment facility in the area. The weapons cache consisted of small arms ammunition, fuses, and a grenade," Isaf said.
