The United Nations office in Afghanistan said Monday that civilian casualties in the Afghan war have increased in the first three months of 2013 compared to the same period last year.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama) spokesperson Nilab Mobarez said that the decline in causalities during 2012 has reversed this year with a concerning rise in the first three months.

"According to the reports, the civilian causalities had a 15 percent decline in 2012, last year, but unfortunately, it has increased in first three months of this year," Mobarez said at a press conference in southern Kandahar province.

She did not reveal what the exact numbers were for 2013, but called on all parties involved in the war to stop harming civilians.

Her comments come the same week that more than 200 civilians were killed or injured in separate Taliban attacks and a Nato airstrike in the provinces of Farah, Maidan Wardak and Kunar.

Mobarez also stressed the importance of a transparent presidential election in Afghanistan, noting the concerns around the lack of security and insurgent groups threatening the election process.
