The US' top military officer arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday to meet American and Nato commanders on plans to withdraw from Afghanistan.
Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, is also expected to meet with Afghan officials and soldiers in the field.
After landing on Saturday north of Kabul at Bagram Air Base, Dempsey was to meet the top US and Isaf commander in Afghanistan, Gen Joseph Dunford.
Among the key issues for Dempsey is the pacing of US troop withdrawal this year and next, as well as the rate of improvement among Afghan security forces.
US President Barack Obama has not announced how many troops he intends to keep in Afghanistan after 2014, but it will probably be around 10,000.
There are 100,330 foreign troops in Afghanistan - 66,000 of which are American - fighting insurgency alongside around 300,000 Afghan security forces.
