The Afghan spy chief, Asadullah Khalid, who was wounded in a suicide attack, returned to Kabul Wednesday morning after being under medical treatment for nearly four months in the United States.
Mr Khalid is said to be in a good condition.
Dozens of welcome messages are printed in big banners across the Afghan capital, Kabul, some calling him "a brave son of Afghanistan".
His office issued a press release welcoming Mr Khaild.
Khalid, who survived the suicide attack in his guesthouse in Kabul on December 6, incurred serious injuries to the lower part of his body.
He was taken to the United States for further treatment on December 15.
Before taking him to the US, Mr Khalid was receiving emergency surgery and blood transfusions at the NDS hospital in Kabul, than he was moved to Bagram Airfield hospital for ongoing treatment.
The bomber, who met with Khalid on the pretext of peace talks, carried the bomb in his underwear.
Khalid has already survived at least two other attempts on his life. One was in southern Kandahar province in October 2011 while he serving as the Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs, and another in a 2008 roadside bombing when he was governor of Kandahar in 2008.
Khalid was appointed head of the NDS by Karzai in September.
