The top Isaf and US commander in Afghanistan Gen. Joseph Dunford has made his first official visit to neighboring Pakistan since taking command earlier this year.

He met Monday with military chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani in Rawalpindi where the Pakistan army is headquartered.

An Isaf statement released after the meeting said the two military leaders discussed ways of "strengthening cooperation and pressuring militants who threaten security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border."

"Kayani reiterated Pakistan's stance and desire for a peaceful, stable and united Afghanistan and the need for a successful Afghan-owned, Afghan-led peace process. He emphasized the need to continue supporting all efforts to bring peace to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region," it added.

Dunford urged Isaf to help Pakistan check the cross-border attacks launched from inside Afghanistan.

"The Pakistanis, the Afghans and the international community all desire peace and security in the region. These meetings are important to achieving that goal as we continue to explore ways to expand our relationship," Dunford was quoted saying.

Dunford trips comes amid continuing accusations between Afghan and Pakistani officials of working to destablilise the neighbouring country.
