Agricultural Produce Falls Despite Foreign Aid

Afghanistan's agricultural produce has decreased in some sectors in the last three years despite more than $5 billion in international aid to rural development, the Central Statistics Organisation (CSO) said Tuesday.

"With over $5.4 billion aid to agriculture, Afghanistan's crops were 6 million tonnes in 1388 (2009), 5 million tonnes in 1389 (2010) and 4 million tonnes in 1390 (2011)," CSO Deputy Chief Hassibullah Mowahad said.

The cause of the decrease is not clear, Mowahad said, but it may be a statistical error.

CSO linked the product decrease to the fact that the government does not use a proper statistics system. If the government organisations were using statistics in implementing development projects, there would not be results like this, it said.

Meanwhile Afghanistan's electricity production was 847 million kilowatts in 2011, down from 937 million KW in 2009. However, electricity exports increased to 2 billion KW in 2011, up from 957 million KW in 2009.

The organisation criticised the government for having no representatives of the CSO in the Council of Ministers or the Economic Commission of the government.
